The article critically analyzes the management indicators implemented in Ecuadorian universities between 2010 and 2024, evaluating their design, impact and limitations. Through a mixed approach (qualitative-quantitative), data from CACES, SENESCYT and SNIESE were examined, complemented with case studies in three universities (ESPOL, USFQ, UCE). The results revealed that only 15.6% of the institutions are efficient according to DEA analysis, with an average technical inefficiency of 34%. In addition, a significant gap in research productivity between public and private universities was identified (0.5 vs. 2.1 Scopus publications per faculty member/year). Interviews with key actors highlighted problems such as the homogenization of indicators, excessive bureaucratization and incentives for publications in predatory journals. The authors propose a new typology of indicators that integrates qualitative dimensions, such as social impact and administrative efficiency, to overcome the limitations of the current model, which prioritizes quantitative metrics without considering local contexts or diverse institutional missions.
