This study assessed the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) use on the academic activities of Metropolitan University students, revealing widespread adoption and diverse applications in education and work. A quantitative survey-based methodology was implemented to collect data on students' familiarity with AI, areas of application, time of use, confidence in AI responses, and perceived influence on academic and professional performance. Most students indicated using AI for tasks such as answering questionnaires and summarizing documents, and expressed a positive attitude toward the technology, considering it a valuable tool. However, there is a lack of institutional guidelines for ethical and responsible use of AI. Based on these findings, a set of recommendations for the Metropolitan University was proposed, including the development of institutional policies, teacher training, curricular inclusion of AI, and the creation of best practice guidelines. The proposal seeks to foster the ethical use of AI and prepare students for effective technological integration in their future careers. This study is an initial step towards understanding and regulating the use of AI in academic settings in Ecuador, providing a framework for future research and educational policies.
