Education is a fundamental right that guarantees the social and economic development of individuals. However, in Ecuador, young people of African descent face multiple challenges in accessing higher education, derived from historical, social and economic factors, and the latter is the most determining. The lack of stable employment, low family income, and high costs of living, transportation, and tuition limit their opportunities. This study seeks to analyze the barriers that limit Afro-Ecuadorians to entry, permanence and academic success. For this, a mixed type study was carried out with a quantitative and qualitative approach and a field research design was used that allowed the necessary information to be collected by applying a survey to 55 young people from the community of Borbón and 17 from Valle del Chota. It was concluded that these young people face multiple barriers to accessing higher education, mainly economic, in addition to having limited knowledge about government programs and initiatives designed to facilitate access to higher education. Academic and emotional support programs, greater Afro-descendant teaching representation, and reforms in the Organic Law of Higher Education are recommended to strengthen educational equity.
