Abstract

The academic tutor plays a crucial role in guiding and supporting the academic and personal development of university students, both individually and in groups. Through their advice and guidance, students can take responsibility for their own learning. The aim of this study was to determine the basic competencies that a tutor must have to provide effective tutoring to their students. The research had a mixed approach. A questionnaire was applied to 195 students from the Dentistry program at UNIANDES University. It was found that with efficient management of academic tutoring, better results could be achieved. The evaluation of the tutoring function focuses on the relationship between the teacher and the student, allowing for the necessary academic reinforcement for the execution of planned activities. Basic competencies that tutors must have are determined from the content analysis. Actions are proposed to strengthen the tutoring work of university professors.
