Continuing education for health professionals on the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases in vulnerable communities.

The present study examines the role of continuing education of health professionals in the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCD) in vulnerable communities, with emphasis on the context of Machala, Ecuador. Through a systematic bibliographic review in databases such as PubMed, SciELO and Scopus, relevant evidence on the relationship between professional training, clinical performance and public health outcomes was identified. The findings show that continuous training strengthens the capacity of health personnel to implement preventive actions, improve the follow-up of patients with NCDs, and promote changes in community lifestyle. In environments with structural limitations, such as those of Machala, these competencies become essential to expand the coverage and effectiveness of primary care. However, challenges persist related to unequal access to training programs, poor institutional coordination, and lack of formal recognition. It is concluded that investing in continuing education not only improves professional practice, but also constitutes a key strategy to reduce health inequities and transform the approach to NCDs from a community, preventive and territorially relevant perspective.
