This article analyzes the relationship between the development of emotional intelligence and the challenges posed by the growing use of technology in education. Based on a review of the Mexican educational system, it examines the evolution of social-emotional learning and argues that, although current curricula recognize its importance, they still have limitations when it comes to specifically addressing the emotional impact of social media, mobile devices, and artificial intelligence on students. Based on Salovey and Mayer’s model of emotional intelligence, the article proposes strengthening social-emotional learning through the gradual incorporation of content and activities designed to develop skills for recognizing, understanding, regulating, and utilizing emotions in digital environments. It also highlights the need to train teachers and strengthen collaboration between schools and families to promote an ethical, critical, and balanced use of technology. The study concludes that the educational challenge does not lie in restricting access to digital tools, but rather in educating students to take advantage of their benefits without compromising their emotional well-being, interpersonal relationships, or the development of their critical thinking skills.
