Educational assessment constitutes an essential component of the teaching and learning process, whose role has evolved from the simple measurement of academic achievement toward a comprehensive approach focused on competency development, continuous improvement, and evidence-based pedagogical decision-making. The present study aimed to analyze the theoretical foundations of educational assessment and identify the principal contemporary trends that are transforming its implementation across different educational levels. To achieve this objective, an integrative literature review was conducted based on scientific publications indexed in international databases, prioritizing recent research and influential theoretical contributions. The analysis revealed that diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment represent complementary processes that support instructional planning, learning monitoring, and the certification of learning outcomes. The findings also demonstrated a growing emphasis on authentic, student-centered assessment models that incorporate continuous feedback, self-regulated learning, and the evaluation of higher-order competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. Furthermore, the review showed that digital transformation and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence are significantly reshaping educational assessment systems by creating new opportunities for implementing more personalized, flexible, and evidence-based assessment practices. At the same time, these technological advances present important challenges related to academic integrity, equity, and the validity of assessment instruments.
